How do we engage school-age children to think about civil rights? We talk with them about baseball!
Local college students from Rivier University are volunteering alongside the Greater Nashua NAACP to deliver a classroom lesson about great moments in baseball history, from the famous talents of the Negro Leagues and beyond. We're using an exciting curriculum developed by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in its Black Baseball Initiative.
The Hall of Fame explains, "the Black Baseball Initiative shares the stories of those who overcame seemingly insurmountable challenges to play the game they loved, while fostering an exploration of the deep connections between baseball and Black America."

Remember that Nashua NH is "the home of the first major-league affiliated integrated baseball team in the United States," as Mayor Jim Donchess said when Holman Stadium was added to the Black Heritage Trail of NH in 2023. "It is important that we honor these two players – Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe – in the place where they made history."
